Despite the dreary weather, it has been a vibrant week of activities at 榴莲成人app下载. It has been wonderful to see a steady stream of our Year 12 boys visiting OSCA House, as they collected their Class of 2024 jerseys and started to familiarise themselves with this special space for our Old Boys. May they spend many happy times with the OSCA team throughout the years to come.
Thank you to all staff and families who participated in today鈥檚 casual clothes day supporting FORaMEAL, a project of the Rotary Club that provides important emergency relief to those impacted by disasters both in Australia and overseas. The funds we have raised will go towards meal packages that will be assembled by our Year 11 boys during the last week of term.
Our Year 11 First Nations students have led a Footy Boots Drive this week, encouraging boys across the school to bring in their old footy boots and runners. The boots will be donated to the Redtails Pinktails Right Tracks Program in Central Australia, and tomorrow is the last day to drop off donations. If you haven鈥檛 already, please do check your cupboards for any pairs of boots your family have outgrown to support this worthy cause.
This week we have recognised Mental Health Week, and it has been great to see our boys involved in activities to help them learn about caring for both their own and others鈥 mental health. A big focus has been placed on physical activity and how this impacts our mental wellbeing, with many activities taking place including 鈥淏attle of the Bench鈥 and ergo rowing competitions. During class, form and tutor groups, the boys have learned about the impact of sleep and diet on wellbeing, and explored other strategies to develop good mental health tool kits.
Next week is a big week for the 榴莲成人app下载 Family, with the Foundation Day Concert on Tuesday evening and Family Day on Saturday 14 September. I know we are all looking forward to coming together to support the boys on stage and on the field, while celebrating the wonderful community we have here at 榴莲成人app下载.

We began this week with recognition of our growing crop of young leaders in the Junior 榴莲成人app下载l. Many Year 6 boys continue to work hard to demonstrate leadership skills and grow their leadership profiles through action and service.
In Monday鈥檚 assembly we took time to recognise the work of our current Year 6 leaders and to celebrate five new official Student Leaders within the Year 6 cohort. Details from the presentation to give context to the work the boys have engaged in can be found here.听
We extend our gratitude to Noah, Tom, Harvey, Henry and Harrison for their continued contribution to, and support of, the 榴莲成人app下载 Family.
As we look ahead to the final two weeks of term, we do so with excitement.
Next Monday sees the House Public Speaking competition. We cannot wait to hear the boys share some of their passions and present with skill.
We look forward to Foundation Day and the opportunity to reflect on the history and heritage of the 榴莲成人app下载l. We wish Luke Heng and Dylan Pai the best of luck as they perform at Hamer Hall on Tuesday evening, a rare occurrence for Junior 榴莲成人app下载l boys.

Serving Others at 榴莲成人app下载 – The Running Water Project
On behalf of The Running Water Project, we would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all the boys in the Junior 榴莲成人app下载l and their supportive parents for the huge efforts that were achieved during our fundraising initiative. We are in the process of counting the money and adding up the hours of service that the boys completed.
It was a pleasure collecting the money as the boys brought in their donations. The satisfaction and joy on their faces as they contributed through their own hard work was incredible to witness. So many boys had gone above and beyond to help others and we are proud of their support of this project.

This week we are focusing on R U OK?Day in the Senior 榴莲成人app下载l. Our Senior students have put together a video about seeking help and being a good support to others, with some cameos from our Senior staff, including Dr Marsh.
Each lunchtime this week, the emphasis is on physical activity, which supports positive mental health.听 Our students have had opportunities to be involved in a friendly staff/student soccer game and other activities for fun and involvement.
At assembly and in Form and Tutor groups, the boys are being encouraged to think about sleep, diet and kindness which, along with exercise, feature in the Record Book and are a timely reminder of the 鈥渢ool kit鈥 that students can develop to support their own wellbeing and mental health.
Sleep for adolescence can be an area of challenge, and the statistics show us that young people are sleep deprived. This impacts concentration, energy levels and can bring about low mood and increase anxiety.
Good sleep hygiene refers to setting up the structures that support getting a good night鈥檚 sleep; establishing a routine at night that limits screen time, reduces caffeine and late-night snacks, especially stimulant foods, and ensures the possibility of a full 9-10 hours sleep.
Meditations and mindfulness tracks, podcasts, music, reading, showering, hot baths, having a hot milk or a drink with honey, can all contribute to a habitual sleep routine, that when repeated every night, eventually signal to the body and mind 鈥渄own time鈥 and support sleep.
Whilst it is tempting to sleep in and 鈥渟tock up鈥 on sleep on weekends, it is advisable for teenagers to go to bed and wake up each night at a similar time, to be consistent. Whilst a little sleep in, or an afternoon nap, can be restorative, experts advise against allowing teenagers to sleep all day!!
So, as we head in to the final weeks of this busy term, let鈥檚 support each other in an inclusive environment – be kind, help each other, check in with colleagues, friends, classmates and friends to see if they are ok.听 And if they are not; this is ok too. Support is available here at school, as well as externally, to anyone who is struggling.
I applaud the students, staff and families of 榴莲成人app下载 for recognising the importance of being open and honest in this domain.
Katrina Brennan

Indonesian Language at 榴莲成人app下载
At 榴莲成人app下载, we are proud of our leading Language Program and the many achievements emanating from our students and staff. Languages have, and always will, remain a central component of a 榴莲成人app下载 education, and indeed, our 2025 timetable reinforces the importance of languages, retaining the number of hours our students spend studying languages.
In reviewing the many courses we offer, it has become apparent that the study of Indonesian language has for some time not attracted the same level of interest as the other five languages or other courses of study. As such, Indonesian classes will no longer be offered to new incoming students.
Students who are currently studying Indonesian language will be able to continue learning this language through to Year 12. This means that students currently studying Indonesian in Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 will be able to study this language right through to Year 12.
Students who elected Year 9 Beginners Indonesian for 2025 will be supported in choosing other language options, and the small number of students who chose Indonesian for Year 7, 2025, will be allocated their other preferences.
榴莲成人app下载 remains absolutely committed to the study of languages and will remain at the forefront of language education in Australia.

Each week in The Torch, our Psychology and Health teams explore a topic related to boys’ health and wellbeing. This week we are talking about R U OK?Day which falls on Thursday 12 September this year.
Understanding the growing challenges related to mental health among young people is an important consideration. Anxiety, depression and self-harm – are all causes for concern. Factors like academic pressure, social media, family dynamics, and societal expectations, are contributing to these issues. It’s therefore crucial for parents and caregivers to take action early, remove the stigma around discussing mental health, and offer accessible support to address these issues and the wellbeing of their children.
R U OK?Day is an initiative that focuses on preventing suicide by encouraging meaningful personal connections and helping informal support networks to help recognise the signs of distress. We urge all families to take part, emphasising the value of genuine human relationships and reminding everyone to ask the important question, “Are you OK?”
Engaging in R U OK?Day activities goes beyond the classroom; it’s a commitment to our students’ overall development. By talking openly about mental health, schools create safe spaces where students feel understood, valued, and supported. As parents and caregivers, you can contribute by fostering open conversations, normalising feelings and breaking down mental health stigmas. Participating in R U OK?Day promotes compassion and shows our dedication to the wellbeing of the entire school community, reaffirming that together, we can truly make a difference.
Please for guidance on how to talk to your child about mental health and engage in meaningful discussions in the lead up to R U OK?Day next Thursday 12 September.
As always, if you have any concerns about your son, please contact Nick Clark at听psychologist@scotch.vic.edu.au听or seek medical or professional help.
